About this event

The LEGO Batman Movie brings big laughs and sharp wit, as LEGO Batman faces his greatest challenge yet: learning to work with others to save Gotham. Before the film, Niki Desautels of Bats Northwest will shed light on the real heroes of our night skies, Washington’s fourteen bat species, revealing how they fly, hunt, and quietly sustain our forests and farms.

In one tightly packed night, two stories: the playful adventures of a caped crusader made of bricks, and the remarkable, often‑overlooked lives of the winged mammals working the night shift to keep our ecosystems running.

Niki Desautels, Educator. Board of Directors President at Bats Northwest

Niki Desautels of Bats Northwest will present an illuminating look into the lives of the Pacific Northwest’s bats, animals that are as important to our region as salmon, yet remain unfamiliar because they work the night shift.

In this engaging presentation, Niki will introduce the fourteen bat species that call Washington home, explain how they support our forests and farms, and reveal why their ecological role is far more significant than most people realize. Niki will also dispel common myths about bats while helping us better understand them, how they fly, hunt, and thrive in our nocturnal habitats. Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast, a curious kid, or someone who’s simply wondered what’s fluttering overhead at dusk, this talk will leave you with a deeper appreciation for these remarkable nocturnal mammals

Niki Desautels is an educator, naturalist, and longtime volunteer with Bats Northwest, where she helps demystify one of the Pacific Northwest’s most misunderstood and ecologically vital mammals. With a background in community science and public outreach, Niki specializes in making bat biology accessible to audiences of all ages via evening bat walks, school presentation, or training new volunteers. Her work focuses on helping the public understand the crucial role bats play in healthy ecosystems, from controlling insect populations to supporting forest resilience. Niki is particularly passionate about dispelling myths, sharing up‑to‑date conservation science, and empowering people to protect bat habitat in their own backyards.

When she’s not out in the field or giving talks, Niki contributes to Bats Northwest’s research and education programs, helping connect communities across Washington with the science, wonder, and importance of these remarkable nocturnal mammals. She is also the author of For the Love of Bats, which will be released by Mountaineers Books on Oct 1st, 2026.

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE

There are big changes brewing in Gotham, but if Batman (Will Arnett) wants to save the city from the Joker's (Zach Galifianakis) hostile takeover, he may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up. Perhaps his superhero sidekick Robin (Michael Cera) and loyal butler Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) can show him a thing or two.
